Morning Musume Poll Results

[Updated 12:16 PM on Tuesday, June 12th 2007] - Jump to Update
So I'm writing this a little later than I had hoped and as I'm typing I'm also messing around trying to pull up the results.
I'd really like to thank everyone that voted, in total there was 487 votes, which to be honest is a hell of a lot more than I thought they'd be, and the votes have come in from all over the world and surprisingly votes from Japanese fans which totalled 43 was the 3rd most popular country, beat by America with 169 and the UK with 44.
Thanks to everyone who used the ranking image, I've seen it popping up all over the place and I must admit that it made me smile seeing it. At the bottom of this post you'll find a list of sites that covered their own favourite members, thanks to Ray over at International Wota for keeping track of most of these.

Before I go into the results, I just want to explain how I kept track of everything, for every vote that was made each member was awarded points, 7 for being voted 1st, 6 for being voted 2nd, all the way down to last palce which got 1 point.

1. Takahashi Ai (2698)
Aichan got a whopping 2698 points, putting her firmly at the top of the list, 354 points ahead of Gakisan in 2nd place. I think a number of reasons may have influenced her position; her taking over as leader, her amazing voice and the fact that she looks so good.

2. Niigaki Risa (2344)
I think another 50-60 more votes for Gakisan at the top of the list would have got her into first place (that's assuming that Aichan was ranked at the bottom), which really goes to show how much of a lead Aichan has. It's good to see that the new leader and sub-leader have ranked so highly in this. I must admit to not paying that much attention to Gakisan and after seeing the preview of her upcoming Alo!Hello I really think she'll be heading up my list. Her facial expressions are amazing and she looks unbelievable as well.

3. Michishige Sayumi (2158)
I really am surprised that Sayumi made it into 3rd place, I know I voted in at number 2, but I have to say I thought her whole cuter than cute attitude really bugged a lot of people, to be honest I was expecting her to appear in the bottom 3.

4. Kamei Eri (1782)
Again, much like the difference between Aichan and Gaki, the difference between Sayumi and Eri (3rd and 4th position) is quite large, you're looking at 376 points difference. The top 3 really are ahead by a lot.
I really love Eri, I loved her bit within Hello Morning with Mikitty and loved the outfits she used to wear.

5. Tanaka Reina (1652)
Looking at the scores these two were quite close, there's not much between them. But to be totally honest I thought that Reina would rank a lot higher in all of this, certainly higher than Sayumi and Eri. Every forum I go to seems to have an extremely active Reina threads, with discussions and photos (mainly photos), I am really surprised with this position.

6. Mitsui Aika (1440)
So the newest member (excluding Linlin and Junjun) comes in 2nd from last. This is better than I had thought she'd do. For me I'm still getting used to Aika and as yet she doesn't hold any real appeal, she has a great voice and one that's completely different to anyone else, given time I can see her getting a higher rank next time I do one.

7. Koharu Kusumi (1338)
WHAT!!! BOTTOM!!! Hahaha, now this I didn't expect. Right at the very bottom we have Koharu, with a score which if doubled would still put her behind Aichan...what happened to the Miracle Girl?? I'm guessing a lot of people disagree with me on Koharu. For me she's ranks at the top of my list, she's funny, attractive, cute, has a great voice...the list goes on, OK, occasionally she goes a little mental but for me that adds to her appeal. What with her solo works, voice overs and now being part of 2nd Generation of Eco Moni, I would have thought she would of ranked a lot higher than this...Oh well, Koharu, you're still my No.1 !!

Interestingly, I'm also able to pull up the results for the amount of times a member was rated as the most favourite (image below), this shows a slightly different view.

Although Aichan and Gakisan are again at the top of the list, Reina and Sayumi (as well as Koharu and Aika) switch places, what this shows us is that although more people have Reina as their favourite (over Eri and Sayumi) it would seem that Sayumi is ranked higher throughout.

[Update] One thing I forgot to mention in the original post was how many times each member made it to the top of the list as someone's favourite;
1. Takahashi Ai (134), 2. Niigaki Risa (124), 3. Tanaka Reina (74), 4. Kamei Eri (64),
5. Michishige Sayumi (37), 7. Koharu Kusumi (35) and 6. Mitsui Aika (19)

These figures I find to be really interesting, especially Sayumi's and Koharu's as there isn't much in it, literally only 2 people more have Sayumi as their favourite, but Sayumi ranked so much higher overall.

Something else I didn't look at in the original post was how the top three voting countries compared when it came to results. At the start of the post I mentioned that the the US had the most votes followed by the UK and Japan, below you can see the results for these three countries.

US Vote

UK Vote

Japan Vote

These results are quite interesting, although in the overall results it was Aichan clearly in the lead with Gakisan following behind, these individual country results show a slightly different picture. Both the UK and Japan have Eri beating Risa and in the Japanese total, Eri actually has the same score as Aichan, the only reason Takahashi appears to be in 2nd place is because I never even considered that anyone would get equal scores and it sorts the results by score and then by name. In the UK results, Eri was only 6 points away from the top score, so who knows, if a couple more people from the UK had voted Eri may have been the top here too.
It's also interesting to see that Koharu isn't at the bottom of these results, even though she never breaks out of the bottom three it's good to see she's not last.

If there's any information I've left out and you want to know, just ask and I'll try my best to find out and update this post.

Wow.... some very unexpected results...! ^_^
Though it's very very understandable that Ai-chan gets the top spot.

I'm wondering if you can filter the rankings by the top 3 countries.
i.e. The rankings as voted by USA. Then UK, and then Japan.

Perhaps the results will be more interesting? (^_^)v

This is really great! I love that so many people voted on your poll! Aichan's #1! It's also great to see Gakisan in 2nd and Kamei at least in the middle. I too am shocked that Koharuchan is ranked last. Behind Mitsii!?? I'm baffled. I love Koharuchan too as she's 3rd on my list. Your scoring system is perfect. You really had this poll set up so well! Thank you for posting the results so quickly!

I wasn't surprised to see that Ai-chan ranked first...
But Sayumi - third!? That took me by surprise. And over Reina T-T. Well, a pleasant surprise (for me at least), was that Mitsii somehow miraculously got more votes than Koharu.

Thanks for the results, I'm surprised that Sayu was 3rd...I thought Reina and Koharu would be at a higher ranking... O.O

Not surprised at all at the bottom 3, almost the same as mine (I had Aika at 5th, Koharu last). I thought Eri would place above Sayumi though. I guess those PBs of her might have had an effect. :P

jinryuichi, should be having a quiet day in work today, so i'll pull up the results per country and post it a little later. I know put up a post regarding how many times members got rated first in individual lists, but I forgot to include the numbers of times each member was voted as the most favourite by someone, so i'll add that as well.

Cool!

It would be really interesting if you/we did this every 3-6months so we could see things change.

An interesting set of results. It didn't surprise me with the top 2 at all but Koharu bottom of the pile I didn't expect at all.

I'm not surprised to see Ai topping the list, though i thought Gakisan would be a bit lower overall. I'm sad that Reina was stuck in the bottom 3, since she was my number 1 by a long shot, though i feel comfortable with Eri's position.

I voted low for Koharu but thought she would be in the top 3 or 4... so that really surprised me.

Anyway, interesting results indeed ^^

Clearly, Koharu was last because she really isn't all that popular with overseas fans. I think it's the fact that she isn't much of a singer if you compare her to the rest of the girls, yet she's given the special treatment. People here tend to pay a lot of attention to this things, as opposed to japanese fans who will love them regardless of their tone-deafness, because they're cute (or have big boobs) Note that this I'm saying is just from a strictly technical level (lol). I like Koharu's solo works, and she's a really hard working girl, she has improved tons from her beginning and looks stunning (just saying... so I don't get so flamed XD)

nice poll would like to see a favorite member of all time poll that would be quite interesting and very thought provoking.

commentComment by xitau on Tuesday, 12th June 2007 14:55
also if ya have time stats of where other users voted from and a bigger break down on favorite members around the world seeing as the top 3 were only about 1/2 the votes.

commentComment by Zeeny on Tuesday, 12th June 2007 15:13
Koharu so should have been higher up. *sigh*

commentComment by jellybelly on Tuesday, 12th June 2007 16:12
what? Koharu tanked the charts? no way! she was atleast my 4th or 5th fave. still i'm glad ai-chan got top 1. ai-chan and gaki-san's appointment as leader and sub-leader respectively probably helped in getting where they are in the polls.

commentComment by jinryuichi on Tuesday, 12th June 2007 16:31
Ah... that's so much better. More informational this time. Thanks for taking the time to filter them. ^_^

So from what I see here (here I go analyzing things again ^_^), while globally Koharu did not do well in the rankings, but regionally she didn't stay at the bottom. In fact she is similar to Sayu's count in getting top votes. Which means she has been getting more popular. So don't despair! (^_^)/

Mittsi however, still needs more time, being at the bottom at most times. I'm sure we all understand that. Gambare Mittsi! q(^_^)p

It's clear that Sayu, no matter how many people say that she is annoying and her cuteness being worn out and whatnot, has been getting favourable votes, and her ranking seems to be all over the place regionally and globally. Meaning that she is growing on us. Kinda scary actually....

Aichan is great, always on the top 2. Either people go for her looks or her talent, it's favourable for her no matter what. (^_^)b
Eri surprised me, by remaining on the top half. Going head 2 head with Ai-chan in the Japanese 43 votes? Interesting! (^_^)/
Reina stayed in the middle at most times, though she got many top votes, but probably found herself at the bottom half in other votes, pulling her average rank down. CJ won't be pleased. (^_^;)
And Gaki-san, what can I say, is a favourite amongst Americans, probably due to her overreacting expressions. I can understand that, cos I like that too. ^_^

The votes broken down by the top 3 voting countries is really interesting. I'm happiest to see Kamei so popular overseas as she's been my 2nd favorite member since late 2004. I love how the results are being analyzed so well!

Fantastic poll, and very interesting results. I'm so glad Lovely-chan came out on top. Give Mistui a year or two, and I think she'll be top five at least. Now how about one for every group in teh project, or maybe an all member of Morning Musume one, to find out who really is the most popular.

I was originally thinking of doing one for everyone within H!P, but I have to admit the thought of it scared me a little, so much work...mainly figuring out to get all the girls onto the screen at once and then sitting down and going through all the results...so much work and that's not even thinking about who I'd vote for, lol.
I hope that at some point I can find some time to sit down and get it all set up.

I'd like to see a Berryz Koubou favorite member poll! But this might just be me. lol.

I recently received an email from Takeshi (he helped put a link up on 2ch to the poll), it makes for a very interesting read and insight into the Japanese fans, I've posted the most interesting points;

"In 2 channel, we Japanese fans often quarrel with each other on this topic. The results of the vote is very intersting.

Niigaki is said to be not so pupular in Japan.
Many fans were dissapointed to know the news of Kago, Tsuji and Fujimoto. Those who don't want to hurt any more may have come to Niigaki. She said, I'm an idol so I won't have a boyfriend.

The ranking of Niigaki and Koharu is rather different from what I expected.
The ranking of Kamei in Japanese results is what I expected."

When Gakisan first joined Momusu I remember this to be totally true back then as a lot of people didn't like her and went as far as saying that she 'looked weird.' Saburo can vouch for this as we both heard these things in real time. This kind of bothered me back then as I've always liked her looks even when she had the bike handles hairstyle. lol. Having heard these type of comments back then makes me really happy with her ranking so high now. I believe it's like her saying "how do you like me now?" to all of those fans who used to insult her before. Maybe some of those fans have changed their opinions about her but that was a long time ago so who knows this may just be the new generation of fans speaking.

commentComment by paul.thomas on Monday, 18th June 2007 12:43
Lol, you have to love that handle bar haircut she had! Although I must admit to finding it a little strange, although her look now is totally amazing.

Your comment about 'this may just be the new generation of fans', could so easily be true, the thing I've always found interesting about Morning Musume (and this goes for all H!P groups) is the diversity in the ages of the fans. I know of fans who are in their early teens all the way up to and above my old age of 28. It's also really noticeable when watching the concerts, the mix of the younger generation and all the older people in their suits. I can't think of any other 'pop' act (espeically all girl groups) that can say that, normally they target a particular age range.
It may be interesting to include a section for adding your age and maybe even sex, on any future polls, but then as to whether anyone would be bothered to fill these details in is another matter, lol.

commentComment by MorningBerryz on Tuesday, 19th June 2007 05:13
Yes that's a great point as H!P fans are very diverse. It is a rare phenomenon in music and I also do notice the great age differences of fans in the audience at their concerts. Gakisan gets the last laugh! :)

commentComment by Fujimoto Hiromi on Thursday, 28th June 2007 13:58
Sorry...but this is one of the few times I have data behind it when I say it...

Koharu's ranking is what she deserves. Her singing voice is worse than Sayu's, so if Sayu is a squeak-horn, then Koharu is like a kazoo! Balalaika burned my ears off...

See, I think the results fit the girls in terms of talent. If Fujimoto Miki were still in the group, she'd DEFINITELY be 2nd next to Ai-chan. Aika's next-to-last result fits her because despite her ugliness and sickening talking voice and personality, she has a singing voice that makes up for it! Niigaki has an excellent singing voice and well-rounded performance persona. The rest have their goods and bads, which round out in different ways. (ex. Eri=good: down-to-earth persona, great voice, bad: can't hold a note too long, sings from her neck a la Kago), etc.

Congratulations to Takahashi and Niigaki, not only at their new positions of power, but at their results in this poll.

As a final note, I'll say H!P fans ARE very diverse. As a Japanese-born 25 year old woman, I've seen H!P from the very start. I've noticed the fan base has changed a LOT...the age factor a DRAMATIC change...going from adult club-going Taiyou to Ciscomoon fans in 1999...to 11-13 year old C-ute fans nowadays...but also in international terms. I bet in 1998-99, when we Japanese were just getting introduced to H!P (MoMusu, Heike Michiyo, Taiyou to Ciscomoon, Miyoshi Chinatsu), no one in countries like the US, UK or Mexico have heard of them. Now you have wotagei in those countries and more! It's very amazing.

FINAL FINAL NOTE: I guess less is more in this case. Takahashi has only one single where Kusumi has many; Niigaki has only been in two main units (Tanpopo, Tanjou 10nen Kinentai) in the past 6 years since she started, while Kusumi has a unit created for her, becoming the co-face of Tanjou 10nen Kinentai (along with Gotou), and other stuff. I think overexposure can actually hurt a career, as we might see here. I don't know. I give up.

I can't really say I'm dissapointed with the results. I voted Risa and Ai at the top and Koharu at the bottom because in my opinion, they're actually talented. I'm not saying the other girls aren't talented, just Koharu :P

Arebear, you may want to have a look at the more recent poll results, at http://www.helloblog.co.uk/comment.php?commentID=260 although Aichan has dropped a couple of positions to 3rd place, the results are quite close. Lol, believe me, if Koha came in 1st, I'd be just as excited with the result!
Lol, hands up who wants to be abducted my Aichan, raises hand ;p
