Manopiano Live

I'm really surprised that it's taken so long for
:::Dohhh UP!::: to upload a video of
Manoeri performing her debut single
Manopiano, I can understand that perhaps making a PV for the release would have been a costly idea with the potential of not making the money back on it but how hard is it to take a live recording? Especially at a live performance.
But, timing aside it's great to see it finally up as I've been dying to not only hear a live performance of the song but also to actually see how much of it is played by Manoeri and I'm glad to see that she plays all of it, for some reason I had this impression that she was literally only playing a couple of notes.
Although this song wasn't what I expected when I originally heard it (
Manopiano, Manoeri's Debut Single) it didn't stop me from enjoying it, also as time has gone on I'm enjoying it more and more, I regularly sit with the CD on repeat when I find myself with nothing to do or I fell like relaxing. Also, now that this live clip has been put up, I find I'm watching this over and over, the mix of the song and Manoeri's cuteness is just a winner!
I've included an edited version of the clip that appeared on :::Dohhh Up!::: below, the original was about 7 minutes long, but I've cut out all the talk and just put up the performance.

Comment by Rad on Monday, 18th August 2008 08:42I admit being completely biased on this topic, having been a raving Manoeri fan ever since the first Ongaku Gatas single broke last year. As a former choir teacher with specific background working with teenaged female singers, I can tell you that Manoeri has a disarming, however unvarnished, delivery. She is sharp on the low tones, a typical pitch error with inexperienced singers (Suzuki has the same problem, only her astonishing raw tone quality is more than enough to overcome any ear-training issues), but Manoeri showed tremendous courage to sing this song live while playing the accompaniment herself.
She appeared to gain tonal strength and air support as she moved through the song. This is such a gentle and stunning departure from her demeanor, and packaging, as an exotic Japanese idol star that I'm almost certain most fans are turned off by it after being exposed to the raucous songs of Gatas.
But I, for one, would travel to Japan just to hear this song live by Manoeri. It is a pure, sincere effort on her part, however awkward the approach appears to be. It is my hope that Manoeri's single was part of the Hello! Project Summer 2008 concert at Yoyogi Park (and will live forever on DVD) -- and it would be a huge bonus for it to be included in the January 2009 H!P extravaganza at Yokohama Arena. I could only hope to be there for such a momentous occasion.
Sometimes a flashy, bombastic vocal style is unnecessary. I love this song. This is a hauntingly simple vocal expression, free of any pretense, and will be ping-ponging around in my head for days, if not weeks, to come.
Comment by paul.thomas on Monday, 18th August 2008 15:30Rad, certainly from looking at the set list of the concert Manopiano features on there, I've yet to hear a date for the DVD release though, but it has to be coming out at some point and when it does I'll be looking forward to watching Manoeri's performance.
You never know, when Jan '09 rolls around she may have have her next single out?? I really that is and when her next single some out, the piano stays, it'll add a whole new feeling to the concerts.
Comment by ddrchik on Monday, 18th August 2008 21:52recording vocals for something is a lot different from recording vocals + instrumental..the second combo would definitly equal delay in my mind.. i'm not sure how much experience she has playing piano but this is her debut as solo artist so making sure she can accurately play and sing at the same time probably took awhile. in the studio she could play through segments of the song seperatly if needed but during a performance, she'll need to play straight through without error.
Comment by MorningBerryz on Tuesday, 19th August 2008 06:56Thank you for editing and posting this!!! For the most part as we've already talked about I've read so much negative reactions to Manoeri's single but at least there's Rad, you and I loving her debut. ^ ^ First I wondered if she actually performed the piano arrangement on the studio version and when that was cleared up I was so hoping that she'd perform it live in concert! As it is H!P is still quite limited in offering live musicians at their shows with the main exceptions being Ayaya and Nacchi of late and just the thought of having a member perform on an instrument live in concert is so dream like! :) You have to go back to Rinne to find one. I'm always so impressed whenever I see someone play an instrument as intricate as the piano and also sing and here Manoeri is amazing!!! Love the song! Love the performance! And UFA must release a live performance of hers on an upcoming concert release!! ^-^
Comment by Chibon on Tuesday, 19th August 2008 15:12thanks for posting this, Paul!!
Up until now I thought ManoEri's single was boring and just too simple but her live performance made me see the charm in it. Her singing wasn't perfect but I loved it nevertheless and she did an impressive job playing the piano. I can't wait to see more of her in future now :)
Comment by Rad on Tuesday, 19th August 2008 17:47@Paul: I'm increasingly concerned about the lack of a DVD release date of the H!P Summer 2008 concert and here we are more than two weeks after it was performed. I just hope Tsunku doesn't pull a stunt like Winter 2006 when not only the arena DVD was canceled outright, the theater (Wonderful Hearts) version was released to fan-club members only in Japan (I was fortunate enough to get a rare copy off Ebay Japan but that was just a stroke of luck).
@Morning: Glad that at least one other person can appreciate the simple artistry of Manoeri. I've even got the single on a loop on my Vox site. Thanx, MB!
Comment by TH!P on Tuesday, 19th August 2008 19:06Huge fan of Manoeri, can't wait until she releases her next single! This was awesome, thanks for posting!
Comment by Strawberrie on Tuesday, 19th August 2008 23:51@Rad: Don't fret just yet, usually the concert is release around October. There is still time, H!P seems to be doing better when annoucing release dates, titles, and PVs lately. Waiting so long makes a person want it even more (or at least me that is).
Comment by minh on Wednesday, 20th August 2008 16:26i love this and i am a japanes i love them
Comment by paul.thomas on Wednesday, 20th August 2008 22:12ddrchik, it's certainly a curious thing, I've no idea how long she's been playing piano for either, but judging from the performance she's either been playing for sometime or has been practising this song really hard. I can only imagine that she's been playing for sometime, it seems like a lot of effort to put in aotherwise?
MorningBerryz, I'm hoping that a live performance like this will get Manoeri some more fans of this single, it's a great performance. It would be great if H!P got themselves an idol based 'house band'.
Chibon, that's great that this performance has won you over, her singing wasn't perfect as you say, but I really thing it suits the song, plus her performance was so adorable. Fingers crossed her next single will be coming out soon.
Rad, hopefully the DVD release will turn up sooner or later, like Strawberrie says "don't fret just yet". The fanclub only releases can be a bit of an annoyance, mainly because we don't really have the option of ordering them and have to pay extra when they appear on Yahoo Auctions...although I wonder if Ohta could order them straight from the fanclub?
TH!P, I can't wait for her next release either it has to be coming out soon, with these indie releases I'd imagine the release dates would have to be close to help boost sales and keep interest?
Comment by Strawberrie on Thursday, 21st August 2008 19:04I personally don't like the single but I seem to enjoy a little bit live compare to the CD but I will continue to look forward to her future releases and watch her improve. Also the DVD for the summer concert have been annouce and will be release on October 22nd.
Comment by ddrchik on Friday, 22nd August 2008 01:03either way, they should do more instrumental stuff..it really adds a lot. something forgot to mention before is that this reminds me of the Ponyo on a Cliff theme. The girl who sings it looks about 5 yrs old but the song sounds really youthful and cute, much like this one does
((also Haromoni's been cancelled (check H!O))
Comment by Ashi on Friday, 22nd August 2008 09:10I loved the live performance of this at the summer concert ahhh and you could tell it wasnt prerecorded too, unlike my favourite H!P soloist XD
Shes still inexperienced but thats what I like about it hopefully we'll be able to watch her 'grow' so to speak. So once she has developed her voice and everyone is wowd by her piano AND singing skills, we can say we've been cheering her on since the beginning lol.
.. I dont really see the resemblance between Ponyo's song and this at all lol sorry
Comment by paul.thomas on Monday, 25th August 2008 00:07Strawberrie, thanks for the update on the DVD release date, knowing that Manoeri will be performing Manopiano has really got me looking forward to this, I can't wait to see it played in better quality and a better screen than on my laptop, I wonder how it was performed?? I can't wait!
ddrchik, it would certainly be interesting to see H!P with more instrumentals although I wonder if the reason behind it is that it takes a little of the attention away from the idol? Hmm, I'm not to sure it's certainly the only reason I can of as to why there's not that much within H!P. I'll have a search for the song in a second, can't say I've heard it before.
Ashi, it's really great to hear that the performance wasn't prerecorded and I agree it will be great watching Manori grow as a talent.
