Top 100 Sales According to CDJapan
Thursday, 1st January 2009 20:26
I hope everybody is having a great start to their New Year! Is it me or did last year go so quickly? It feels like only yesterday that I was taking taken down my
W 2007 Calendar and replacing it with 2008's
Morning Musume Calendar and now this morning that's replaced with the 2009 version.
What a year 2008 was, for me it's certainly been an eye opener, I've discovered a few more artists outside of
H!P that I just can't get enough (
Wonder Girls,
Hey Girl and
Kayo Aiko being the ones that really stick in my mind) but also within H!P I've taken more of an interest to the other
Wonderful Hearts units.
Although I really feel that Morning Musume should have done so much more on the whole Singles front last year it's thanks to this lack of releases that has really allowed me to sit back and get into both
Berryz Koubou and
C-ute. In my opinion 2008 was all about C-ute, they really smashed it with their releases, with each single release better than the last. Also it's given me the chance to really get to know the girls within each unit and instead of just having a handful of favourites from both units I can say that all the girls now appeal to me much like they do within Mornning Musume and actually putting them into an ordered favourites list is something that I would have to give serious consideration to. And as for favourite releases of 2008 that's another thing that is going to need some serious consideration, the only thing I can say for certain is that the PV for
Yuke Yuke Money Dance has to be my favourite. I'm about half way through typing up my answers to Amy's
H!P Best of 2008 Poll but before I finish it off I thought that it would be good to see what actually were the best selling releases of last year.
CDJapan has it's usual end of year Top 100 Charts (full listing for all the charts can be found here) and it's always interesting to see where H!P feature in these.
CDJapan Top 100 JPop CDs (
Complete List)
 | No. 42 Morning Musume Cover You | | No. 54 Buono! Cafe Buono (Limited Edition) |
 | No. 56 Buono Cafe Buono | | No. 71 Berryz Koubou 5 (Five) |
 | No. 74 Ongaku Gatas 1st Goodsal (Limited Edition) | | No. 96 C-ute 5 (Five) |
I think the most impressive thing with H!P's first appearance in this chart is the fact that it's Morning Musume's
Cover You album, with it only being on sale for a little over a month it must have sold a great deal which I guess is understandable, with a year extremely short in CD releases from them an album is always going to draw the fans in.
Although, when looking at it
Buono!'s
Buono Cafe kicks the arse of Cover You with both the Regular and Limited versions appearing within a couple of positions of each other.
CDJapan Top 100 JPop DVDs (
Complete List)
Much like the previous years I've checked this, Hello!Project really comes into it's own when you look at the JPop DVD releases. Although there are no releases within the Top 10, H!P still manage to take up a quarter of this chart which is amazing. I'm also really pleased to see that
Sayumi's
Love Story DVD managed to creep in there, although it's at the bottom it seems to be the only DVD of that sort within the whole list!
Well back to finishing off Amy's poll.

Comment by jyoru on Friday, 2nd January 2009 02:59Yeah, three cheers for COVER YOU. I'm listening to it almost daily at work and I'm getting to the point that when 'Koi no Dial 6700' comes on, I'm gonna be singing and dancing and doing flips and such. Not the wisest career move, but the people who haven't heard this record are missing out.
Everyone's raving about Buono!; they were right about Double Rainbow, right about Rika's 'Onna no Ko>Rikaishite', they were right about 'Aoi Sports Car', so it's time to jump on that boat, methinks.
Last night I finally decided to check out Capsule. If you like earworms, see them for yourself. Definitely worth the time.
Yay, Kayo Aiko!
Comment by Matt_D on Friday, 2nd January 2009 10:15That's nice to see, and it does show the kind of figures HP still ships, reminds me I should get the battle concerts some time, although maybe not for a good while, 100 yen more or less being a pound (once you add tax and postage, makes Matt unwilling to spend.)
Ooo yes Capsule are good, a maid in a cafe in Japan gave me a mix CD with a load of Capsule stuff on, turns out Perfume was made(promoted etc) by one of the guys in Capsule.

I'm pleased Cafe Buono sold well. I rate it as one of the top 3 HP albums along with W's 2nd and Biyuden's Ist. I was disappointed when I first learnt that MM were recording a cover album but I was very impressed with it - most of the songs were new to me anyway. I'm looking forward to watching the new Nice Girl DVD but I must finish the Idoling DVD first.
Lets hope for an exciting 2009 on the JPOP front
Comment by Hexi on Friday, 2nd January 2009 18:51the last few months of 2008 have mostly been consentrated on merchandise and groups i never really paif attention to. all thanks to a certain someone.
i'm so glas Cover You did well, i went a little awol when i first heard they were doing a cover album "What?! why?! has Tsunku run out of ideas?! who's idea was it to do that anyways?! I'll shoot them right now!!" but it's actually my favourite album next to Hangry and Angry of course.
I think 2009 is going to be one of the biggest years for H!P yet. what with the elders leaving and that leaving room to bring in fresh talent and all. wander if we'll see a 9th generation to go with the year?
Comment by Morningtime on Friday, 2nd January 2009 21:14I'm most made up to see two Biyuden dvd's getting into the top 100. Both are excellent and it's good to see there's been some love for them. Oh and the High King single V getting in there is also pure joy. Ongaku Gatas snuck in there too. Yay. :D
Comment by Gina on Saturday, 3rd January 2009 19:39It's sort of interesting to see who sold more battle concert dvd's regarding to Berryz Kobo and C-ute - it appears more people love Berryz Kobo, though the sales figures may have to do with the fact that the Berryz Kobo tracks came out later than the C-ute tracks, and people tend to go for newer I suppose. However, it would've been interesting to see who sold best if they were released on the same day.
Comment by Rad on Wednesday, 7th January 2009 02:38I can't take Oricon seriously. How can Morning Musume's cover album, Buono! and Ongaku Gatas (what?) by the top three Hello! Project CDs? The DVDs are also severely underranked. This just makes me respect Oricon even less than I already do. I like your optimism, but Japan's music industry remains clearly biased against idol music.
Comment by paul.thomas on Wednesday, 7th January 2009 03:20jyoru, it's really impressive that Cover You sold so many copies in such a small space of time, expecially when you compare it the times that both C-ute's and Buono! albums came out. I really need to do a write up for the album, but I'm finding it hard to find the time to write it up, so busy at the moment :( But Koi no Dial 6700 is one of my fave songs on there as well, lol it certainly one of the more amusing ways I can imagine being pulled into the bosses office! Buono! are totally awesome,I wasn't too sure at first when they first came about but right from hearing their first single I was won over, such a unique within H!P! And thanks for introducing me to some of Kayo Aiko's songs, I've yet to get any of her CDs but I'll def be ordering some of her CDs when I make my next CDJapan purchase.
Matt_D, I'm curious to see how well H!P done within Japan, do you know if anywhere has the years sales rankings up? I'm guessing Oricon would be a good place to start? But it's great to see that they're doing so well in the overseas market at least especially with the DVDs! The Battle Concerts are great, one of my top concerts ever! Exchange rate sucks though, going to put a stop to the odd random buy and even the odd sinlge release...it's a real shame.
Zendra, I totally agree with you on the Buono! album, it's totally amazing I forget at times just how good it is and then I listen to it all the way through and just think "WOW, quality!". And again Morning Musume's cover album was a worry to me to, but again impressive stuff, I guess not knowing most of the tracks makes it seem like totally new songs! Are Idoling any good? I've seen them appear in some of the magazines that I get, but I've never looked into their music, probably should at some point.
Hexi, lol it's easy to get hooked on the merchandise isn't it! Just wait, you'll get onto the photos soon enough and you won't be able to resist them any longer! The Hangry and Angry album still rocks! Was listening to it on the train on the way home, really hope we get some more releases from them this year and obviously that they come to the UK!! I wonder how well they sold? I'd actually be really curious to know how well they sold from JapanFiles and the American sales..
Hmmm, a 9th generation? I've still really not really taken a liking to all of the 8th Gen yet, not that I don't like Junjun and Linlin it's just I still don't feel the same as I do about them compared to the other members....although Junjun in a bikini...I really wan't excpecting her to look so good! She's gone up a couple of notches in my opinion ;p
Morningtime, it's actually really nice seeing them in there isn't it, it would have been shame if they hadn't. I miss V-u-den...damn, soon enough the whole Elder Club will be graduating...I'll miss everybody :'( Really hope that we see some great releases from all of the Elder Club this year, well so far it looks likes it's going to happen, with the best ofs and singles and albums lined up, should be good!
Gina, it's quite close between the two isn't it, I wonder if perhaps if quite a few people were buying copies of both, which is why they were so close togehter? If they were releasued on the same day it would certainly be interesting to see who sold more. I ended up getting myself the C-ute version, one it came out secondly I just LOVE C-ute!!
Rad, has Oricon put up their charts for the year? I'd love to see those! Or do you mean this one? This is taken from CDJapan, so I'm guessing it's more of a reflextion of sales outside of Japan. As for the DVDs personally I'm just impressed that they take up so much of the chart, some may rank low but they take up one quarter of it in total! That's impressive stuff!
Comment by jyoru on Wednesday, 7th January 2009 04:48Speaking of girls in bikinis, check out Kamei Eri's new photobook 'Hatachi'. I always liked her, but now I am totally in love with the girl.
At work today I had a phone call with a gal whose last name is 'Takahashi' and unfortunately got the problem solved, so I didn't have to take down her name and number to return the call later. If she'd have tried to spell it, it'd have gone like this: (her): "T A K..." (Me): "I know how to spell it, I'm a Momusu fan." (Her): "Mo-ma-what?" She lives in California, and I'm sure there are a lot of other 'Takahashi's there.
I bought every Buono! song from iTunes US (all 3) and I've yet to listen to them. Probably because I bought every Capsule song available there, too, and they're just beyond incredible. I know Buono! is good, I've watched the videos you've posted here.
You may want to consult me before making any Kayo Aiko purchases; if you get 'Dolce' and 'POP' you've got all but one song. Not that I don't want sales going her way, but you've got options.
Comment by Zendra on Wednesday, 7th January 2009 14:39Paul , the Idoling album is very good apart from the first track. Their TV program would not be to everyone's taste but they wear nice short skirts.
Comment by paul.thomas on Thursday, 8th January 2009 01:39jyoru, I got a copy of Friday a few days ago and they had a preview of it, Eri does look good! I must get around to scanning it in. Lol, thankfully it wasn't Michishige I always have trouble spelling Sayu's name, always have to keep repeating it to myself and even then I'm never sure, lol.
I'm in the middle of replying to your email so, I'll tag it on to ther :)
Zendra, hmmm, I may just give it a go, I think my next lot of purchases will be a good listen, Idoling, Kayo Aiko and SNSD. Lol, nice short skirts are good, I think I could handle the show lol!
Comment by Hexi on Thursday, 8th January 2009 18:44You're such a perv!
i don't want to get hooked on photos! i don't wanna keep them all locked away in a folder. i's not fair to them.
although i will most likely be coming home with a good few thousand after japan.... Y_Y
i really hope H&A wasn't a one off thing for the label. where would i get my Yossie fix if she doesn't do anything else?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Comment by paul.thomas on Friday, 9th January 2009 23:19H!P photos are awesome, they make up for your fave members not getting PBs to some degree, I do enjoy my Erika and Nakki photos, seriously they need a PB release!! When you're in the H!P store they'll be no way that you won't be able to resist, wall-to-wall photos there's absolutely no way anyone could resist, lol.
Well with Hand & Angry doing the US appearance I'm kinda presuming that it won't be a one off thing, it seems a little extreme to promote the unit overseas and then disappoint anyone who saw them and liked them by not doing any more releases...fingers crossed!
Lol, me, perv?! I think you've mistaken me with someone else ;p right I'm off to watch SNSD's Gee MV....um, nothing to do with their shorts or anything ;p
Comment by paul.thomas on Saturday, 10th January 2009 00:03Zendra, I forgot to mention that I've had a hunt around for some of Idoling's PVs and I'm really enjoying them. Currently listening to Hannin wa Anata desu♥ it's a really good song! Also found a site with the downloads for their TV program, I'll try downloading one and give it a watch over the weeked/
Comment by Matt_D on Sunday, 11th January 2009 14:04Do the CDJapan top hundreds only include figuers from CDJapan, or do they include neowing aswell? Neowig being the Japanese side of cdjapan? We know Oricon results arn't worth much salt as they don't include online sales and only sales from the big stores.
Comment by paul.thomas on Tuesday, 13th January 2009 11:13Hmm, not to sure.. Had a little a hunt around the Neowing site and I can't seem to find a similar 'Top 100' on there anywhere so I can only guess that it's just for CDJapan. It certainly would have been interesting to compare the two if they were both up.
