Hello!Project 2009 Poll Results
Monday, 20th April 2009 03:30
I've finally got around to sorting out the basics of the poll results (overall results and age/gender of people participating) over the coming week I'll be going through the results in a little more detail, breaking down the results and looking specifically at how countries, gender and age voted. For the minute check out what I've dubbed the "scrolly polly" below to see the final results of the poll.
I've been totally amazed by how popular the poll has been this year, getting more than double the amount of people entering this year, 3613 participants is really mind blowing! And again I can't thank everyone enough who helped push the poll for me on the forums and blogs! And although I'm still in the middle of sorting the votes per country (I had actually finished it mid week, but I forgot to save the results...crap!) it looks like the US and China/Hong Kong/Taiwan are the people that have really made the numbers up and with such a large amount of votes from the East, I'm so looking forward to comparing them to those of the West.
The only thing that I've regretted with the poll this year, is that I had originally intended on looking much more in the actual range of those taking part and instead of having age ranges like the previous year using an exact age, unfortunately I forgot about this towards the end and only remembered after I put the poll live. It's not so much of a problem but I'm curious to see which end (if any) the majority of fans fall within the ranges specified.
Much like the previous years results (
Morning Musume, Berryz Koubou, ºC-ute Poll Results) it's the teens that seem to be where the majority of fans are, followed closely by those in their twentys. Again I have to mention how much of a shame it is that the specific ages aren't know, I can guess by looking at the results and how much of a drastic difference there is between the Under 10's and the 11-20's and the 21-30 and 31-40 age ranges. I could be totally wrong, but I'm guessing the average age must be mid teens to mid twentys which is exactly the same conclusion I came to on last years poll, so things haven't changed here much.
Again, there hasn't really been much change in the gender of those that have taken part. The girls are still in the lead with the boys only just behind, infact if you compare the graph from last year to this aside from the difference in the amount of people who took part they look almost identical. And when I come to break down the results down further in the next post I'll make sure to compare the results of guys against the girls and see if there's any major differences.
So, onto the actual results themselves. I guess I should explain how the scoring went, basically I went for the Eurovision approach, assigning the member in the first position the most points and the member in the last position the least, so the member in position 1 got 10 points, position 2 9 points and so on until the member in the last position got 1 point, any member that wasn't selected receiving no points. The points were then added together and then ordered by the highest, with the member with the most amount of points winning.
So, in case you can't see results at the start of this post, or if you want to have a quick look through them without having to wait for them to scroll across the screen, here are the results in reverse order.
Positions 60 to 51
To be honest I'm not really surprised with the positions 60 down to 51. The
Ongaku Gatas Egg members although I like them (my fave being
Sawachan, whose second from last) they don't really offer me much outside of Ongaku Gatas and to be totally honest even when I'm watching Ongaku Gatas related I'm always drawn to the likes of
Yossie,
Charmy,
Satoda and
Konkon.
The only tie within the whole of the voting is at position 57, between
Sengoku and
Akari.
Positions 50 to 41
This is where some of the results to me become a like bit surprising. It's the complete mixture of Eggs, Elder Members and Ice Cream girls. To be honest I wasn't really to see
Noto this far down, when it comes to the Eggs, I just always presume that she would have been the most popular. And to see all of
Melon Kinenbi to go out this early...well I knew they weren't exactly that popular but still.
Position 40 to 31
More surprising positions, well for me at least. In particular seeing the both a member of
Berryz Koubou (
Masa) and
C-ute (
Kanna) out done by some Eggs. And to be honest the positions of both the
Shugo Chara Egg girls was a surpsie as I was sure that
Yuuka was the more popular, although
Kanon does look extremely cuddly I wouldn't have thought it was a reason to be more popular ;p but looking at the scores (if you want to see all the scores look at the scroller at the top of the post) there's only 26 points difference between them so it was quite close.
Position 30 to 21
And now we see the introduction of some of the members that I put into my personal Top 10, it's kinda sad not seeing them any higher,
Nakki,
Erika and
Chinami. But it is interesting to see that
Nacchi has made an appearance here, I was curious to see as to who would come out on top out of her and
Ayaya and as much as I love Ayaya I was sure that Nacchi was going to beat her, so I'm pleasantly surprised that she did.
Position 20 to 11
So into the Top 20, and another couple of surprises. First,
Manoeri she seems to be getting a whole lot of attention lately and so I was expecting her to be higher, certainly higher than the likes of
Nono,
Mari and
Ayaya but I guess it's much the case of new blood vs old blood, and with members like Nono and Mari and certainly although the likes of Mari and Nono haven't really released a lot over their years, their personalities are something to be rivalled and as much as Manoeri is being pushed I think I've yet to see a personality that I'm attracted to, it's more the perception of her or her image that I like I think, if that makes sense?
And the biggest surprise for me, seeing
Mikitty in the No.11 spot. Seriously I wasn't expecting that one at all.
Position 10 to 1
The Top 10, the 10 big hitters in the poll. With Aichan claiming the crown, which seems quite fitting considering she's now the proud owner of the leader of
H!P as a whole. And although the Top 10 is fairly
Morning Musume heavy it's good to see that's there's a mix of both the Berryz and C-ute in there, both with what i consider to be the two most popular members within those groups present.
Airi has done astonishingly well, I knew that she was popular but to see her come second well, good on her.
I'm also really pleased by
Koha's position, seeing as she always fallen to the bottom half of the previous polls I wondered how she's fair in the overall, and although technically she's still towards the bottom end of Morning Musume she's still ranked within the Top 10 of H!P as a whole, so I don't feel that sad any more, she is loved lol.
I was planning on look a little further, pulling out the whole groups (well Morning Musume, Berryz and C-ute at least) and comparing their positions here with those of the previous polls, as I'm sure their popularity would be similarly ranked if it was just the individual group rankings. But it's getting on, the post has taken longer to write up, code and get the graphics for than I thought, now...I need to catch some sleep, I'll try and spare some more time tomorrow to post again about the results.

Comment by CatchFiveBats on Monday, 20th April 2009 04:35I have to ask...in which way were you surprised that Miki came in 11th? I'm assuming you were expecting her to be lower, but I just want to be sure. XD

Comment by amyrulez on Monday, 20th April 2009 04:39Congrates Paul. You've done another great job with the poll. And I'm glad that Ai-chan gets the 1st place. Reinya and Eri are close behind, so personally, this is a satisfying result for me. :)
Comment by freedom4651 on Monday, 20th April 2009 05:46hey, don't forget. all buono members are in top 10 :D
Comment by MKS SF 1909 on Monday, 20th April 2009 07:28takahashi(t) first? Impossible. I demand a recount.
Comment by BladeMaster on Monday, 20th April 2009 07:33Yay for Reina!
I voted Ai-chan pretty high as well, her character in Q.E.D. is too good.
Job well done once again, Paul.
Comment by Rick on Monday, 20th April 2009 08:09Paul thanks for teh work you put into this. Had a blast with it(including Shiro's corrupting of the list)Your hard work is appreciated and enjoyed. now whats been going on in Kindai and UTB?
Comment by .Brian on Monday, 20th April 2009 08:17Thanks for these more the interesting results!
Airi in 2nd place. Interesting!
Comment by Miko-chan on Monday, 20th April 2009 08:22So many of my votes were out before we hit halfway...
And like you said, of course you wouldn't expect Melon Kinenbi to rank too high, but it's still pretty sad. ;___;
But it's great that Ai-chan's still as popular as ever!
Comment by Kazuma2387 on Monday, 20th April 2009 08:41Thank you for this poll. Im happy that Airi got 2nd place!! I didnt expect Miyabi to beat Momoko and Risako. that one was a little shocking
Comment by omame on Monday, 20th April 2009 09:34Thank you.
I wanted the first and the second point to widen a difference.
I think that there were many Japanese votes this time.
I look forward to the result according to the country.
Comment by Matt_D on Monday, 20th April 2009 10:17I'm satisfied with Reina's position, should be 1st but we can live with 3rd, alot of tough competition.
@BladeMaster I concure, QED made an Ai-chan fan
Gotta say I'm pretty pleased with Mano's polling considering how down on her everyone seems to be (beyond she's cute most folk have little to say about her.)
Comment by Hexi on Monday, 20th April 2009 10:40Just as i predicted. Ai is 1st.
Bah the top 10 are so Predictable!
14 is not where Yossie should be. she should be somewhere in the top 10...... but sayu makes up for that being 6th i guess.
but really...... the top 10 are so predicatable.
Ai, risako, miyabi, momoko, reina, koharu, maimi....... they're all really predicatable. and apart from Gaki and Eri there isn't alot of difference to who is pushed at us most in songs......... hmm.......
guess it pays off to push members at us.
although airi is 2nd! so yay about that.
*no sour grapes intended at all* ^^
Comment by yushan on Monday, 20th April 2009 11:45Yay! My favourites are in top 10 XDD
All of Buono is in top 10 too :O
Comment by Rocketaka on Monday, 20th April 2009 11:53Abe-chan is 25th!?!!!!! She's my 2nd favorite! Atleast my favorite is number one! Grats Ai-chan! 6 out of 10 of my top ten were in the top ten. Good results :)
Momo should be a lot higher imo. Top 5 for sure :) Atleast ahead of Miyabi. :(
Comment by Magatsu on Monday, 20th April 2009 12:36Ai at No.1 is no suprise to me. She's the best the best combination of beauty, singing and dancing in hello project. Airi No.2 is a very nice surprise. She's always had an outstanding singing voice. Now that she's starting that her features are starting to mature her beauty is starting to shine also. I'm glad Risako didn't finish in the top 10 also. While i have nothing against her, she's not a very good singer or dancer, though she's Berryz front person most of the time.
Comment by wahashimoto on Monday, 20th April 2009 12:41Ahh, Korekore, I love you so. Your obscure face is <3
I'm glad that Miyabi was on top of Berryz. I was sure Momo would be at this point in time but its good to see Miya's still where she belongs. =P
And I'm really glad Captain made it into the top 20! Super happy about Chisato being 3rd most popular C-utie and Miki (almost) breaking the top 10.
Top 5 I knew for sure even their placing. ALthough tbh, I was expecting Airi to have 20k points and Ai-chan to have 25k points when I watched the scrolly thing. XD
Thanks for the awesome work Paul. And if you are considering making the 'polls by location' post, I'll eagerly await that.
Comment by tsukiakari22 on Monday, 20th April 2009 14:41wahhhhh ;_; my beloved elders club are so low. I'm glad Yaguchi at least went okay but I wanted to see them a bit higher before they graduate and all. Oh well... Not even Mitsui went as well as I'd hoped though. *sigh* Oh well. At least Yaguchi and Ayaya beat Mano Erina. That's good enough for me.
Comment by Siggy on Monday, 20th April 2009 15:21wow, takahashi is on top now
im pretty satisfied with gaki-san coming up on the 5th too
and airi <333
Comment by Rad on Monday, 20th April 2009 16:11Not surpriging to see C-ute members rated so high, and Berryz is right in there. Great poll, Paul. The major point to be made is that Hello! Project's business decision to graduate the entire Elder Club was likely a good ne, albeit painful.
Comment by Morningtime on Monday, 20th April 2009 16:23Interesting results. Thanks a lot for doing this poll Paul. It's always good fun to see these kind of things.
I guess the low ranking of some of my favourites like Kaori, Nacchi and Yaguchi can be put down to the majority of voters being too young to actually remember them in MM. At the same time I was really pleased to see my own personal number one get top spot. :D It was also good to see two others from my top 10 make it into the overall top 10. Good to see Reina in there and I'm made up that Koharu is so popular.
I guess in the top 10 I'm only really surprised by Miyabi. I know Buono and Berryz are popular but I didn't realise she was. I always put it down to Airi and Momoko.
I was quite surprised Matsuura wasn't higher and I was really surprised Konno was so low down. Like I said though it's the age of the voters meaning the currently most active get the most attention.
Great results in terms of numbers voting though. You must be really pleased.
Comment by Gak on Monday, 20th April 2009 19:2222nd for Chisa? Doesn't matter, she's still number one for me <3
Comment by Kookyprincess22 on Monday, 20th April 2009 20:08YATTA!! I knew that ai-chan was going to win & i was right~! wahoo!
GO AI-CHAN!!!!
Comment by DoubleJ on Monday, 20th April 2009 20:39I'm very happy to see Mikitty so high up on the list, narrowly missing out being inside the top 10. Has she moved up from last year as I can't remember?
Comment by Jon on Monday, 20th April 2009 20:41The results actually look fairly close to my rankings. The only thing that surprised me was Airi. I had no idea she was so popular.
Comment by Jon on Monday, 20th April 2009 20:44Oh also would you consider showing the results for men vs women? I'd be very curious to see if people's favorites differ by gender.
Comment by Zendra on Monday, 20th April 2009 21:22Paul , congradulations in producing a wonderful poll and also for the technical brilliance of the format. Also , many thanks As for the results I was very pleased my number one girl Airi came second but I have to say I was surprised Ai won it as she takes a bit of criticism on other websites . Now here's a thought - do you think the girls themselves have noticed this poll ? Perhaps one of our Japanese friends can tell us if the girls look at the private HP websites - the question may have cropped up in the Question and answer sessions .
Comment by Rosie on Monday, 20th April 2009 21:53I have to say it's rather disheartening the way the voters seem to have forgotten how talented the Elder Club is. Not that I was totally disappointed with the poll, I just feel like the poor sempai got tossed aside.
Comment by ada on Monday, 20th April 2009 22:40could you post the results for boys, girls and different age groups as well?
Comment by Xacur on Monday, 20th April 2009 22:56Kitahara Sayaka has the name of Kikkawa Yuu :(
Comment by ForeverLove!~ on Tuesday, 21st April 2009 00:15Im so happy that airi made it to # 2, i knew she was popular but i never thought she would be that popular. and im glad momoko made it to the top 10 and risako didn't. i thought for sure that momoko was more popular than miyabi, but i was wrong.
Comment by Nozofan on Tuesday, 21st April 2009 21:51Nozomi is only #17 :O Well, she's the best for me ! Ha ha
Great poll Paul ! ~
Comment by James on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 01:23Wow~! Some nice results. This is the first of your Polls I've done, but not the last. I am a tad surprised at the Eggs outranking Kanna. Not surprised at the top 10 though, Airi, Momo, Miya and Ai - got to love them <3 Well maybe just the order of the top 10 is a bit surprising, to me anyway. I'd shout you a pint if I could :D Cheers.
Comment by Archejoiyo on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 02:14YAY Risako at 12!!!!!!!!!!! <3 Good Good <3 !!!
And Airi... ZOMG O_o #2? LOL that's insane!! So popular!
Comment by paul.thomas on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 02:34Just a real quick post to say I haven't forgotten about the country/age/gender break down, I'm still working on it, had a busy couple of nights and I haven't had a chance to finish them off, I'll get them up as soon as I can.
Comment by Tamatan NY on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 04:10WHAT!? Ayaya is below JunJun?!
Someone, please tell me what's so good about her...
I can't sleep tonight.
Comment by Cyndi on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009 17:09Hm.. I kinda prefer JunJun over her, but it's probably just because JJ is in MM and thus more popular.
I wanna know how Airi beat Reina .. and Eri, Risa, Miyabi and Momoko. Of course Ai is number one. ha. no surprise >_>
Hmm seems a bit strange to me about Airi though.. (Multiple votes?) Eh.. Reina is still my number one.
Comment by Brenda on Thursday, 23rd April 2009 01:21Maasa #35? T.T
Well, she's still my favorite <3
Comment by MorningBerryz on Thursday, 23rd April 2009 04:41Awesome scrolling graphics Paul!! \(^o^)/☆ You're so amazing~!...thank your for compiling the results for us......ahhh I'm so happy to see 6 of my top 10 in the final top 10 here! ^ ^ Kyaaaa! Nacchi at 25 though..(;´□`)!
Aichan at #1= ♥~ ………(゜∀゜)………。
Comment by takahashifan on Thursday, 23rd April 2009 13:45yes!! ai-cjhan got first! that's my goddess!! she's so pretty! u have to admit the members of the slightly popular groupings like mm or buono, berryz or c-ute did get highly rankings..n compare the girls in top 10 and last 10..the top 10s are either prettier or younger which gives them more chance of exposure
Comment by Yukipyon on Thursday, 23rd April 2009 23:57Ai won? What is so wonderful about her? >_>
Reina or Airi should have won - -;;
Comment by momo on Friday, 24th April 2009 03:34Well it appears the majority like aichan, there's nothing wrong with that. I'll say that I like her too but opinions will vary.
Comment by IchibanB on Friday, 24th April 2009 09:38Very interesting results. I'm not surprised at Miyabi's ranking as she's is pretty and talented and has always been my favorite BK member. I love Airi but I had no idea she was that popular, but good for her! 7 of my top 10 made it so I'm happy.. was a little sad to see how far some of my old faves had fallen tho(Mari, Nacchi, Rika).. Mari used to be the #1 or near the top for years in popularity polls.
Anyway, well done with the poll and I look forward to any more you do!!
Comment by Cyndi on Friday, 24th April 2009 15:50I agree with you Yukipyon.. Blah. haha.. :|
Comment by melfin on Saturday, 25th April 2009 10:11well! i expect this to happen, Airi took the second place--she's starting to show up!!
Comment by omame on Tuesday, 28th April 2009 16:18When is the popularity vote result according to the country?
I want to watch the popularity vote result according to the man and woman.
Comment by paul.thomas on Tuesday, 28th April 2009 18:41Hopefully tonight. I was struggling with making all the results, but realised last night that I can automatically generate them, so I've come along way in one night :S
Just need to do the last little bits, so as I say, fingers crossed tonight
Comment by paul.thomas on Wednesday, 29th April 2009 03:11OK, maybe not tonight, too late to do the write up but the all the images are done, so it'll give me something to do tomorrow lunchtime :)
Comment by paul.thomas on Thursday, 30th April 2009 02:15Well, I still haven't got around to making the post, but I have uploaded the image, so if anyone wants to have a look at it they're more than welcome to download it from the link below, it's a bit on the large side though as I couldn't think of how to display it smaller. It features results for Male/Female and all countries with votes over 100

Comment by Cyndi on Thursday, 30th April 2009 03:14Thanks for posting the image Paul! :)
I'm a bit upset that Reina didn't do better.. and that Ai topped almost all of the polls..... sigh. However, as I'm looking at the numbers.. some of them seem suspicious.. like UK's, Thailand's and China I think it was. That's just my thinking though! I might just be hoping Reina did do better than she got.. but it's a bit hard to believe that JunLin pulled the top two spots, with JunJun having a 300 or so point advantage over. I think quite a bit of people may of used several email addresses.. Maybe next year, you can enforce a 1 vote per person (IP address)? I think that would suffice.
Thank you for your hard work on this Paul, we all appreciate it!! I've been checking back constantly for the results post so now I'll be checking back for your post about it. I can't wait to see what you think about it. :)
Comment by paul.thomas on Thursday, 30th April 2009 11:05Yea the UKs reaults were a bit surprising to me to, not so much Junjun but Linlin's position.
As for the voting, well I thought about restricting to 1 vote IP on the very first poll I did, but on sitting down and planning it it didn't really work out. If you're on a network only one person can vote and unless everyone has a fixed IP address they can vote again as soon as it changes. What I do with all the polls is do by email address, so one vote per email and if that email address isn't valid (if i get a bounce back saying it doesn't exist) it doesn't get included in the final results (I think they totalled about 500 votes) but there's always the chance that some can slip through.
Comment by Matt_D on Thursday, 30th April 2009 17:50@Cyndi
Hard as it is to believe a number of households (mine) have more then one person who wants to vote. Also most people have access to more then one internet connection (home, work, mates house, school, library, uni,etc...)
ERck I'm ashamed at the UK - America all is forgiven.
Comment by Cyndi on Friday, 1st May 2009 13:13I know Matt_D, my little sister voted too and I have several connections but it bugs me that people will vote 9258493 times just to see their favourite place higher, and it's not a fair thing. I dunno. Haha, I'm weird sorry. I'm a bit sore about it.
Comment by Matt_D on Friday, 1st May 2009 14:00@Cyndi
Is there any evidence that that happend, and any evidence an ip ban would stop it?
If someones willing to go to the effort of scripting a bot to create results it's only a small amount of effort to have it route via proxies or use spoofed addresses. I'm pretty sure it'd only take a few hours and a perl script to get it going. For mail addresses use generic free accounts or mailenator.
Comment by Cyndi on Friday, 1st May 2009 15:37Never said that it DID happen, just that's what it appears like to me. I've seen people boost the view count for favourite videos on youtube, so I don't have any doubt in my mind that a couple seriously devoted wota would do that as well. I know quite a few tech-savvy wota who get on rather well with computers and all that. There's never going to be a way to stop them, I suppose. I'm not trying to start a debate, just putting what I think out there.
Comment by Rosie on Friday, 1st May 2009 17:52@ Cyndi
Yeah The UK results do seem kind of like that don't they? Unless there really are that many avid fans of the Pandas there.
On an unrelated note, I am really happy that Yossie made it into the USA top 10. :)
Comment by Matt_D on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 02:58the UK numbers are so low that I wouldnt' doubt their validity, Junjun is hot and I hit her up high in my numbers and the UK likely has a lot of more recent MM fans + a high Chiniese national population.
Most of the UK folk I've seen had linlin in there top 5, damn most of them didn't have the goddess Reina in.
From a tech savvvy (10 years profesional experiance 5 in IT security) wota.
You either take poll results at their face value or you don't. Limitiing factor will just be detremental to normal users and will do little to limit manipulators.
Comment by Cyndi on Monday, 4th May 2009 17:19Hmm, that's true. I didn't consider the actual numbers of UK votes overall.
Comment by Tasuki on Tuesday, 5th May 2009 12:52You forget that people in the UK love the underdogs --> enter Jun/Lin, who have constantly battlted their way through language barriers, akward interviews and deregetry comments and still manage to make us laugh!
Although I'm admittedly very surprised at Lin Lin's position (she has really grown on me though) I'm not at all at Jun Jun's. If you do an ebay UK search for Morning Musume it comes up with "related searches: akb48, JunJun, Berryz" - and it's been doing that for months XD
Comment by Yvan on Tuesday, 5th May 2009 18:58i just love the result of this poll...with Mikitty being the highest scoring Elder in the overall result, and my other favorites (Yossy, Yaguchi, and Kame) finishing in respectable position...the only thing that disappoint me is that Miki scored lower than Kusumi...coz in the real world, Kusumi got no better point of interest compared to Miki...but well, that's only my two cents...
Comment by MomoFan Jheyde on Saturday, 23rd May 2009 23:06Hey, its Airi for the kill and Reina for the win
But add Q.E.D. to Ai and everything becomes unfair... along with the experience, and the title.
Koharu does deserve to be in the top 10 (For the NOT MM PVs for me), and I guess, like me, some people see the potential in JunJun, hence her ranking, but its all potential for me though.
Comment by susan on Friday, 25th September 2009 10:09with Mikitty being the highest scoring Elder in the overall result, and my other favorites (Yossy, Yaguchi, and Kame) finishing in respectable position...the only thing that disappoint me is that Miki scored lower than Kusumi..
Comment by Maya on Sunday, 20th December 2009 14:07Hmm...My fave members from are:
Berryz - Yuri and Saki
C-ute: Maimai and Maimi
Morning musume: Risa and Aika
And my VERY FAVE member of H!P is Abe!! All in the top 30!!!
Comment by Asianlover on Thursday, 31st December 2009 13:27How long has it been last updated?
I'm so proud of Miya being on the 7th slot, higher than Risako. <3
Comment by paul.thomas on Thursday, 31st December 2009 17:35This is the lastest poll, I've got a new one in the middle of being done, and if all goes according to plan should be up sometime in Jan :D
