Hello!Project 2009 Poll Results Continued
Saturday, 2nd May 2009 02:10
First up, apologise for the delay in posting about this, it took quite awhile longer than I had originally intended.
Have you ever had one of them moments where you overlook the most obvious thing? Well when I first started splitting everything off by country and gender, I was doing it by hand. I'd totalled up the results and began forming the images, you can probably guess how long it was taking to do, organising that many images by hand...killer. It wasn't until the start of the week (I think) when it suddenly occurred to me that the code I use to generate the images for the individual users can be altered to display the individual countries and gender. I have no idea why this idea didn't cross my mind earlier, it's not like it's anything unusual as it's what I've done in the past polls. I guess the fact that the individual results only show 10 votes rather than the whole thing...oh well, after realising this it took me a night to get them all up and displaying. Don't I feel like an idiot :S
The other problem I've had is how to actually display these results, because there's so many of them it was so hard to organise them in away which didn't take up that much room and was easily comparable to theo ther results. In the end I created one HUGE image, you won't be able to see them all on the screen in one go, but it's the best I could do, lol the scroll bar is your friend ;p
So the first thing to look at in a little bit more detail is how the sex is split up through the age ranges. I only realised once I had put the up the poll that I had intended in looking a bit deeper into the whole age range aspect of the poll, and instead of doing via a range to offer actually selected a specific age, as although these results tell us the range I'd really love to see which actual age features the largest fan base. Oh well, something for me to do on the next poll.
Comparing the results of this year age range and sex against last years (
Poll Results Continued), it's good to see that not much has actually changed (lol, sorry the graph isn't as attractive as last years). The female fan base is still larger than male and after seeing these last year the surprise of this isn't as much, in fact I was anticipating that this would happen, it's not like much will change in a year.
The results are extremely similar, with the teen range being the most popular and with the girls being in the majority within that range, followed by the 20's with the guys just taking the lead in this area. I wonder if this was reflected at
Hangry and Angry's appearance and in the upcoming
Morning Musume appearance in LA?
Moving onto the countries, I'm still surprised to see that the poll spans so many countries. It's good to see that this year that this year that it's spanned over into the asian countries as it really gives us a chance to compare the results. Previous results have had votes from countries such as China etc, but not in as much quantity. Again, I have to thank Kelly for posting it up on the forums and writing instructions on how it all works. I'm still a little disappointed with the Japanese votes, as I'd really of loved to get a more as that's where most of the fans reside, but I can't complain 102 votes is certainly impressive and gives us a good idea of how they vote.
If you click on the image above you'll be taken to a more readable image (the image itself is fairly large so you made need to be patient whilst it downloads as it's just under 6mb).
Because of how large the end image would have been I decided to limit the amount of countries shown in the image above to those with over 100 votes, if anyone wants to see a country not shown, just leave a comment and I'll generate the image and upload it for you.
For the most part I find the results to be fairly unsurprising, with
Aichan coming out top in the majority of the results. The most interesting result I think has to be the UKs with
Junjun and
Linlin coming out on top. I can say that I totally wasn't expecting that. Lol, is
Gina building up an army of UK based Junjun fans ;p
There's been some talk in the previous post about the results (
Hello!Project 2009 Poll Results) as to how accurate these results are and as to whether there was multiple votes. The only thing I can say with this is that I do my very best to ensure that all multiple votes are removed from the final results, that's not to say that some can't slip through. And I'd just like to explain how I sort through these results. In an attempt to try and limit multiple votes I use the email addresses as a basis of validating and limiting votes. By storing the email address I'm able to limit it to one vote per address, and then with the sending out of the image codes I can then keep track as to which address is valid any bounce backs are then removed from the final results. And a search is then done pulling up any multiple posts from the same machine and any glaringly obvious multiple votes are again removed. So although the results might not be 100% accurate I can assure I do my best to make sure they are as accurate as possible.
I'm actually really pleased to look through all of the country and gender results and see that the Top 10 for all of them don't just contain Morning Members, sure they take up most of the top 10 but it's really great to see that some of the other members are appearing in there to, most noticeably
Airi,
Miyabi and
Maimi it's good to see that the fan base is supporting all the units.
Right, that's it for me, I'm off to bed. Been a long day and I'm sure I've managed to catch the piggy flu, I feel like complete crap. Let's just hope I don't start snorting :S

Comment by T!MM!! on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 03:03Interesting result, and good analysis.
I used to think that, the taste of girls from different continent might not be the same, but the result shows that it's pretty much in one direction.
thanks for your poll.
Comment by solo-kun on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 03:13Oh, the gender and country breakdowns are very interesting. Some members make some relatively significant jumps between the segments.
Thanks again!
Comment by momo on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 04:40Seems that alot of countries like aichan, but sayu is in the top 10 for the US though which is good.
Would you be able to put up the results for Germany? I want to be able to show it to my German friend and get his opinion on it.
Comment by xiaoxiao on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 04:52thx..interesting results..
can be post singapore n malaysia?thx alot..
Comment by Rosie on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 05:08Thanks so much for posting even though you aren't feeling well! I hope you don't have the piggy flu! Get well soon!
Comment by Lefty6409 on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 07:23Like most people have said before, very interesting results. There were some non-surprises (Icecream Musume and most Eggs having trouble getting out of the starting blocks) and some surprises, at least for me (JunJun cleaning house in the UK, but LinLin getting little love in China, Maeda Yuki scoring points).
I guess I should have taken the poll and made my opinion count. Not that it would have done much good to the overall vote as I'm in the US, and my vote wouldn't have affected anything, given the point spread. But I would personally like to give internet hugs out to the UK, Brazil, Mexico and Canada. Why? For being different and giving me something different to look at. Haha. My top 10 choices would have been similar to the UK's by maybe swap Reina for Miki, LinLin for KonKon, and maybe just to mix it up, NoNo for either Yuko, Kaorin or Ayumi, and then there'd be some rank adjusting.
And you're right, solo-kun. Talk about wide-jumps for some of these. I think the longest span of placement (correct me if I'm wrong) goes to Mari with 33 places, who placed 36th in Japan, but 3rd in Brazil.
Comment by Rikki on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 07:59One NOT surprising result: Hitomi Yoshizawa finished much higher among women than men.
Some surprises:
1. You've got female voters mainly from age range 12-22, with an average age of around 15 or 16. You've got male voters mainly from the range 17-30 with an average age of around 21-22. I'd have thought that the tastes of those two groups would be quite different, and yet the results for the two are very similar.
2. Miki Fujimoto finished higher among females than males.
3. Ditto Rika Ishikawa.
4. Rika did not even make the top 20 among men.
5. LinLin really low in her home country.
6. Mari Yaguchi was 36 in Japan (behind Kei Yasuda! WTF?!?!?)
7. My two personal favorites finished 2nd and 3rd in Brazil, much better than in any other country. I've never even been to Brazil. Why are my tastes so similar to Brazilians?
Most surprising thing of all:
Some people actually voted for Mitsui.
Comment by Kazuma2387 on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 08:14Thailand must love Buono! lol
Comment by GKKM on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 09:05Miki is popular still now? HAHA, I think this result is pretty different from Japanese "Genba(concert)". You should try advertising this page more and more when you organize polls and push to the general public except people who join your community. But good job. You are absolutely one of the biggest fan in foreign country. I'll surely vote next time to someone. So...when is the next time?
Comment by Specktakus on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 09:38Male ratings that I expected to see (and came true):
--Higher:
Sayumi
Momoko
Risako
Manoeri
--Lower:
Miyabi
Yossie
Fujimoto
Male rating surprises:
--Higher:
Chinami
Captain
--Lower:
Koharu
Rika
Comment by Morningtime on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 14:56Thanks a lot for all your work on this Paul. I found the UK results very interesting. I'd never have expected all the Bananagirl and Linlin love. Great to see Yaguchi so well liked here too.
Comment by somp on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 15:27Hmm..
Where are the Dutch?
Im from the Netherlands and I entered the poll. Did I not fill in my country?
:S
Comment by Pinoy on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 15:51Philippines please!
Comment by momo on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 15:55@somp, it appears nobody from Holland did the poll as there would have been a result in the country list above.
Comment by Gina on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 20:43Damn right I'm building up a JunJun army :P We should start a parade somewhere in London, lol. I'm really happy that JunJun ranked so high in the UK rankings, she's awesome and totally deserves it. Maybe it's the fact that my JunJun obsession has rubbed off on my friends? But uh.. I don't have THAT many friends. Oh well, the JunJun love is powerful :3
Comment by Ida on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 20:43What were the results for Sweden? :)
Comment by Rad on Saturday, 2nd May 2009 22:27Wow. This would make any MIT professor proud. Plus, I'm sure the braintrusts at Hello! Project, UFA and Japanfiles can make use of this extensive fan database.
It's great to see Morning Musume clearly be the top group in overall popularity, but Berryz and C-ute are breathing down their necks. This justifies, in many ways, the overall tact of developing these performers as Eggs, then moving them through the ranks before they get to the age wree their popularity starts to fade.
Finally, this hard data shows why the Elder Club, or at least most of its members, had to go.
Comment by Kelly on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 01:01lol~ no need to thanks, i was wondering who will get the highest votes throughout the world anyway, it seems like most votes goes tom ai and airi,
morning musume still it's very popular!!! and junjun got the highest in th UK, wow~
Comment by Jasmine on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 06:11i would like to see the voting for Singapore.
hope to see it ASAP.. :D
Comment by Miko-chan on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 10:06Seeing as the internet fanbase is mainly dominated by USA fans, it's great to see the opinions of people from my country. And I'm proud to see that us Australians prefer Rika to Yossie, even if it's just by 10 points xD
Comment by Rina on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 11:51I am SO happy to see that the rest of the UK agrees with me about Jun/Lin's amazingness. This just increased the love of my country.
Thanks for spending the time doing this poll. it's really interesting and I can't wait for next year. Hopefully we'll get even more people then!
Comment by .Brian on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 16:23Very interesting results. I wonder they UK is into Jun/Lin more than Aichan. Are you sure these results are valid? :P Also, I was just wondering if you will ever release a DB dump with the votes in it? For those who get sexually aroused by statistics like moi, and wish to run their own queries against it. :3 (Minus the privacy sensitive data of course ;D)
Comment by toby on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 19:42Gina... too damn right i am also building up a junjun army..... and i am starting from yorkshire !!!!
Comment by Cotton Cloth on Sunday, 3rd May 2009 19:49Really surprised to see Jun/Lin take the top spots in the national results. I think they're both great, but it just doesn't seem very plausible. And Rika down at 22 for males? That's so strange.
Biggest shock remains the success of Suzuki Airi. I'm barely aware of her existence. I know she's in Berryz or C-ute but that's about it. Has she done something I should be aware of? Maimi is really the only H!P kid who has manage to impinge upon my perception.
Comment by differentstory12 on Monday, 4th May 2009 03:26This was pretty interesting to see, thank you for the results! I kinda expected a similar rank for the Japan results but not for the rest of the countries. Thanks again!
Comment by Gina on Monday, 4th May 2009 14:06Jeez Toby you're stating in the same place as I am :P So I don't see it expanding much beyond here yet haha.
Comment by Yvan on Tuesday, 5th May 2009 18:51please make a statistic for Indonesia, tho we're only contributing 67 votes in this...anyway, i'm glad to see Fujimoto Miki finished quite high in the gender statistics...the highest scoring Elder in Male, and only bested by Yossy in female...nice to see her still "there"...
Comment by ivankov on Wednesday, 6th May 2009 03:04can u generate one for Malaysia??
i know it's not many but i wanna see it...
Comment by paul.thomas on Wednesday, 6th May 2009 18:26Sorry for the super late replies, a mix of feeling like complete shite and far too much work :S
I'll try and get the results for Germany, Sweden, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia up tonight at some point so keep an eye out.
Thanks again for everyone who took part in the poll, it's so great to get such a good response with these polls.
T!M!!, I always find it interesting to see any patterns with the voting and it's really interesting to see that there's certainly overall favourites not just as an overall collective but broken down into countries and gender as well. And it's really good to see that the inclusion of Berryz/C-ute members in the top 10s is consistant throughout. Lol, it certailny explains why the likes of Airi get so much attention within releases and so many PBs.
solo-kun, yeah it's interesting to see how members are favoured in other countries. I was really shocked with the Junjun and Linlin jump within the UK!
momo, i'll do my best to get the Germany results as soon as I can, fingers crossed tonight. I don't have much planned for tonight so as long as I don't fall asleep as soon as I get in they'll be up :)
Lol, looks like you're not the only Sayu fan in the US, you may have to share her lol ;p
xiaoxaio, much the same as I said to Momo, fingers crossed they'll be up tonight.
Rosie, thankfully it was just a bad cold and I'm over the worst of it now, just a cough that sounds like I smoke 100 cigs a day and a bit of a sore throat, although the guys in my work are still staying clear of me :S
Lefty6409, yea I wasn't really expecting the Eggs to do particulaly well but there was some surprise results for some of them, mainly Noto. Within the poll in general I would have thought that she would scored higher she seems to be a fairly popular member within Ongaku Gatas so to see some of the Shuga Chara Egg members getting higher was quite a surprise.
Riki, Yossie does certainly seem to be favoured more highly amoungst the girls than the guys, lol I wonder if that's more than just a perv factor to it?
The average voting age seems to be fairly consistant between this and last years poll, I'm still surprised that the girls out weigh the guys in the poll. I'm really kicking myself that I didn't take the whole age thing further this year I had planned to, but i just slipped my mind, would have loved to been able to look a bit more indepth and see exactly what the popular ages for fans were.
Lol@ your Mittsi comment, she's a totally adorable girl and is looking really hot in the most recent photos of her (plus she's gorgeous in a bikini) so, on that front I can totally understand why people are voting for her!
Kazuma2387, lol you'd imagine so. But then, who doesn't love Buono!
GKKM, that's what was the most surprising aspect of the whole poll for me, that Mikitty was THAT popular. I guess I'm going from my personal opinion and I've never really favoured her outside of GAM and towards the end of being within Morning Musume. Personally I'm really shocked that for the most part she always beat Ayaya.
I always try to promote the poll outside of the English speaking community, the past two polls I've managed to get friends to post up links on 2ch but they've generally not been taken to well, certainly not as popular as the links and transalted instructions provided by Kelly and Xacur, plus this year with JapanFiles also pushing the poll, it's been an execptional turn out. If I remember rightly with the poll previous to this the Japanese fans that saw it were not overly keen on entering their email address into the poll and with this being the way I stop multiple posts it stops them from voting straight away if they aren't willing to enter it. WHG always cover the results of the poll (thanks if you're reading this!) and they always seem to attract a lot of Japanese fans to the site when they do, I'd love to have asjed them if they could of provided a link before the results to help grab some more Japanese votes, but unfortunatly I wasn't able to find any contact information on the site. Fingers crossed with the next poll it'll get even more votes and fingers crossed even more Japanese votes. The Polls are have been yearly, as I like to try and get another H!P project inbetween them so I'm guessing probably sometime in the first part of next year.
Specktakus, Chinami's legs must of be catching more of us guys attention lately ;p But yeah the rating of Charmy was a bit of a surprise to me too, certainly when you consider how many PB releases she has, you would of have thought she would have been right up there.
Morningtime, yea it was total surprise to, but it'd good to see them getting some love from us brits!!
somp, that was my bad, I've redone the image with the country results. It looks like in my attempt to balance out the text for each column I accidentaly deleted a couple of the results :S Ireland being the other one. They're both up on there now.
Pinoy, I'll try and get it up tonight.
Gina, ah so it way your army of JunJun fans ;p Lol, I knew you'd love Junjun getting the top score for the UK!
Ida, I have no idea, but I'll check tonight and put it up with the rest of the countries I'll be adding.
Rad, it would certainly be cool if they did, at the very least it shows that there are fans in the West. Yea, it's good to see that the Berryz and C-ute members are giving the Morning Musume girls a run for their money, I wonder what it'll be like on the next poll, perhaps more of them breaking into the top positions? And as for the Elder Club members it does show the possible reason for their departure, I guess if you're not popular you're not bringing the money in and with the whole money situation at the moment that probably means a lot.
Kelly, I no you said there's no need, but thanks again lol. I really appreciate it! Yep, Junjun seems to be fairly popular within the UK, which was a pleasent surprise.
Jasmine, lol sorry i've not been quicker in getting the results, fingers crossed it'll be up tonight!
Miko-chan, I've always wondered how popular H!P is amongst other languages. I guess the problem with my poll and my general knowledge of the H!P community on net is based around the whole English language which would mean that the US would always come out on top, there's just so many of them in general. Lol, I'm thinking I might have to go on a little hunt and search for H!P sites in foreign languages, I'm guessing there must be quite a few Russian fans out there.
Rina, glad to see you enjoyed the UKs results, they were certainly interesting.
.Brian, well the results entered into the final stats were all from valid unique email accounts and any multiple voting from the same IP addresses were also looked at by me. I'm not going to say the results are 100% accurate, as with these things they never will be, but I'd like to think that the majoirty of legitamte votes help balance out those votes that could be made to help push certain individuals.
Lol! Well I can certainly have a look at putting the sql file up....it just means people will get to see how messy i am with my data. One major pain with this years was me referencing each member by an abbreviated unit name and numbered position within the group, it seemed at the time a nice quick and easy way of doing it until I got the final results and had to kee figuring out who they stood for lol.
toby, hahahaha, you gina should get together, combine your armies and get the Junjun love out there even more ;p
Cotton Cloth, Rika's positioning is a little strange for the guys, you would have thought that she would have been higher, she's just so hot lol. Yea Airi's positioning was a surprise, I knew she was popular but not that popular. Personally I've never really paid her that much attention but I have to say recently she's been getting a fair bit from me, she's certainly amazing within Buono! especially in the latest PV where she looks stunning in the dance shots.
Comment by differentstory12 @ 03:26 AM on Monday, May 4th, 2009
This was pretty interesting to see, thank you for the results! I kinda expected a similar rank for the Japan results but not for the rest of the countries. Thanks again!
Yvan, I'll put up the results for Indonesia as well.
ivankov, yep no probs.

First, congrats for all polls.
The gender-country imagem, in Brazilian rank there a error: the rank after Fukuda Kanon is strange. 28th and go back to 26th, 25th, 24th.
The votes are right. Only the numbers are shuffle.
Thanks.
