Hello!Project 2010 Poll Results

With each poll I've made for the site I've tried to make each one slighly different to the last. I do this for a couple of reasons, but the main one being that I like to try and make things more difficult for you guys, and I mean that in the nicest possible sense. Speaking from my own personal taste, if I was to create a favourites poll for each individual unit I'd be able to sit down and enter my results with very little thought.
I know my favourites within each unit off by heart, it's a list that although changes it's variation isn't that great, but to rate all of the current active Hello! Project members is a harder task and required more thinking, although Nakki may be my favourite within C-ute how does she rate amongst my favourites within Morning Musume and Berryz Koubou? And it was this kind of thinking I wanted to get everyone doing. Plus overall we get to see a global ranking of H!P as well as still being able to break it down into individual units.

With spot on 2700 votes, this year poll has again had an amazing turn out, I'm still always shocked by how many people take part in this and it really makes me so happy to know that people do, as without you guys taking part in it they'd be no point to it, so thanks everyone! With the added incentive of the prizes offered by HelloStoreUSA and JapanFiles it's really helped push the poll some more, so thanks to all the guys over there for offering the prizes. I've sent out a mail to all the winners of these prizes awhile ago, so if you haven't recieved a maiil in your Inbox unfortunatly you haven't won this time.

Before moving onto the results (I've had you guys waiting this long for them what makes you think I'm going to dive straight into them =P) let's take a quick look at the break down of the stats of the people that participated. A quick break down in Age, Sex and Country in an upcoming post I'll be breaking down results relevant to these three stats so we can get a better idea of favourites within these sections.


These results have pretty much stayed the same throughout all the polls. Girls out numbered the guys just slightly, and the teens hold the majority of the fan base with American getting the top spot for the location of fans.
The only slight change in the resutls is the gap increase between in the sexs, girls have gained an about an extra 5% making a just over 10% difference.

And so it comes to the results that we all no doubt want to know, the member ranking results. Working these out I've used the same system that I've used with the previous polls. The higher the ranking the higher the score the member recieves, 1st position gets 25 points working all the way down to last position who recieves just 1 point. Totalling up all these results then gives us our results, how much has changed from the previous polls? Lets take a look. (The numbers in black are the overall score each girl recieved).


Although the majority of these results (for me at least) aren't surprising, there are a couple of positions that I'm really surpsised with.
For me the Top 5 come as no surpise, I wouldn't have been surprised if the likes of Airi or perhaps Momo were to have made an appearance in it, but aside from that it's spot on to what I was expecting. Aichan is just an all round loveable girl and although I might not 100% agree with her top spot I can totally see why she's there.

Looking at the 6-10 positions are where things start to get interesting for me. First, the position of Airi, 9th isn't the worst position to be in, it's still within the Top 10 and it's still the top position for a C-ute member, but considering her 2nd place position last year it is quite a drop. I wonder if the lack of excitement I've seen over there last few singles and album release of C-ute have an affect on this?
A nice surprise is Captain being pushed up to 8th place, I might bash her a slightly on twitter for her resemblance to Toxie, but I really do like the girl! And seeing her push her way up is great.

11-15's only surprises are the positions of both Maimi and Risako. Maimi's ranking within C-ute isn't, she's still comes in at 2nd place but her overall ranking seems a lot lower than i thought. Although to be fair ALL of C-ute's position seem a lot lower than I was expecting. Risako... oh Risako what have you done? From 3rd to 6th with Berryz Koubou rankings? Again presonally I can understand it, as much I liked Risako when I first got into Berryz I'm finding the other girls in it more appealing now, although saying that I don't think anyone with Berryz can beat a Risako PB release!

I have to say that 16-20 is a little disspointing for me, as it features some of my favourite members within H!P, Mittsi, Nakki and Chisato. What's Nakki doing this far down? Seriously!

And finally the bottom 5, 21-25. Containg pretty much the whole of S/mileage and Manoeri, I feel bad saying that I'm not surprised, but I'm not. S/mileage can be let off for their low positioning as they are relatively new unit and although they seem to have quite a strong following, they met their smile count and at least the H!P fans I talk to seem to be all over them, I think as a whole they don't really compete with any of the other members as yet, it'll be interesting to see how they do in next years poll.
Manoeri, I'm still puzzled by her. And this postion kind of reafirms my thoughts on her. She gets a hell of a lot of press, screen time and a decent amount of singles with decent Limited versions, that the other units don't seem to get. And I've always kind of felt that all of this is some sort of push to get us to like her more? Although it hasn't really had an affect on me, I like her, her singles are a nice break from the norm with H!P but as a whole I'm still struggling to like her as much as I did when she was within Ongaku Gatas.


It's nice to know that the order things are still in place. It would be a very worrying time if Morning Musume was pushed off of the top spot, whose ever heard of the flagship group not being the favourite amoung the fans? Morning Musume, Berryz, C-ute and Buono! ignoring personal preference that's exactly how the top 4 should be, it's the way they're meant to be :) Actually saying that, aside from S/mileage beating Manoeri I'd say the results are what I'd imagined them to be. Guardians4 don't really stand a chance against the popularity of the other units and were always going to come in last place no matter what.

I'll try to find the time in the week to do another break down of the results by country, but considering how long it took me to get these up, it may be the week after. Keep an eye out, they will be up at some point!

Good to see a healthy 1% of voters are transexuals/hermaphrodites XD Interesting results but not very surprising, especially the group one. Good to see Aichan still at the top lol. The lowest ranking Berryz member being higher than 3 out of 5 C-ute members is pretty disappointing though.

@Hexi: I wouldn't mind f***ing Ai if it meant the hell would be removed from the poll :D

And though I had Aichan as last, when I voted, I'm fine with her ranking here. =3
After I voted, I began noticing her charm, more, since the make-up changed (from the "really-thin-face" one)~

And for ManoEri... Kinda sad, since she's already a gazillion times better than her first Indie. =P
Though, I guess the first impression heavily affects the audience, when it comes to an Idol. >,>
I'm hoping that this year, thanks to her appearances everywhere, her confidence will go up and she'll become more appealing to others. =3
(Can't say it will, since I don't pay much attention to her. XD)

The poll is the truth if you ask me ~ and not surprised the least bit from mostly the western fans.

If we all think about it for a second~ not every fan is as hardcore as us fans here who know everybody in H!P, what singles they've done and what their likes and dislikes are. A big chunk of the western fans just care about Morning Musume, if not just from classic hit songs through their trips.

And though I believe that there may be more females than males that voted, I'm pretty sure that the 41% males that voted, voted mostly of Morning Musume girls, as they probably could care less about the other groups, unlike the females who I'm sure knows of the other groups more and spread their votes.

And I mean, there are a bunch more new fans this year around, because of Morning Musume's trip to LA. And totally Ai has to be #1 <33

Thanks for taking the time to do this each year! I can't imagine the amount of work that must go into designing and setting up this poll, let alone tabulating the results.

I'm impressed with the number of near ties that showed up in the poll considering the point system you used. Risako and Aika are practically tied, as are Yurina, Maimi, and Chinami - a handful of strong votes one way or another could have changed the order of those five entirely! This applies to Captain, Airi, and Miyabi as well.

I am very interested in seeing the country-by-country results, but I'm also curious as to how the results differ by gender or age group. For instance, I have a hunch that Manoeri appeals slightly more to older fans because her style of music and performance tends to be very different from the rest of H!P - calling her "more mainstream" might not be too far off the mark.

awwwwuh! Saki Ogawa was in my top 5! I can't believe she got dead last, seeing as she's got the best vocals in S/mileage (next to Kanon), and cute looks. o.O
as for Airi, I'm not too pleased she got ninth (although it is hard to beat out MM in the first place), but she's first out of the other C-ute members, despite all hate she got when SHOCK was released.
Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with the results! ^_^

The biggest surprise for us is seeing Aika down at #16(?). Aika fans usually buy up all her goods within minutes of going live on our store (ranking just behind Ai Takahashi in sales)! So we know the Aika fans are out there in substantial numbers.

Whoa! I'm surprised to see Gorokkies taking the entire top 5, but I guess that is a testament to the flagship power of Morning Musume. A little disappointed to see a couple lower ranks here and there but it is my personal preference.

While Mano Eri may be good.. she's simply not particularly interesting on her own field. She's very sweet and her songs are very sweet and she's very nice but... She's not a vocal powerhouse like many members, she's cute but not MADE from cute like many members, she's an okay dancer but there are many better. She's pretty, but, there are girls prettier.

Its hard coming up with one thing that she is that no other person also is a little bigger.

A little surprising Thailand came second in the country list! You could try to do a per capita type bumber for that to country with the densest HP fans:)

Shame that Buono could not crack to mighty three groups at the top. Despite MM being the top one, Berryz Koubou is seriously not as far off as I would think though!

Is there any difference in say top 5 member ranking based on different region (say US vs. Lat Am vs. Europe vs. Asia)? Would be interesting of there is any trend in that.

Just out of interest also, what are the number of botings year by year? I imagine it must have gone up quite a lot from the first time you did this.

And like many others, thanks for taking time to do all of this! Having worked with data a lot myself, it is definitely a lot of work and it is always really fun to see the results and all the analysis that comes with it. Afterall, once all the data collection is done, analysis is definitely the fun part:)

Looking at Mitsui's popularity (or lack thereof) I can't help thinking of the sales at an official H!P store in Tokyo. Himalia over at AKB! Online has a contact there and he posts the results of who has sold the most merchandise each month. Obviously the results are affected from month to month by stock issues and whether someone has just had a photobook or dvd released. Even so amongst Momusu Aika is usually fighting for bottom place with Linlin. In April she was second to bottom above Niigaki but Niigaki had had major stock issues. It's also interesting that Mano is one of the best sellers each month. For some nothing much changes either way though. Poor MaiMai is always to the bottom with this blog's poll and H!P sales regardless.

So what does that tell us? Nothing. Other than I quite like the people who shop in Tokyo. :p

dbesthair23, it's a hard one to tell, fingers crossed though when I do the break down by country and sex we might be able to see some difference between the Japanese voters and the others and as for the sex thing, well I guess we'll see. I don't think it's entirely true that the guys are just voting for Morning Musume rather than the other units, certainly speaking from my own taste, but the girls within Berryz and C-ute are certainly pushing their way to the top of my favourites.

beatto22, I haven't seen one, but then I haven't checked. I'll ask around and see if anyone knows of any and see if I can knock up a comparison.

Mina, yea both Ongaku Gatas and Hangry & Angry are active, but with this poll I wanted to keep it to the girls still under Hello! Project. I might get around to doing another poll over the next few months if I can find the time to cover the over girls, it's a shame that Melon Kinenbi has split, they had soared up in my tastes.

HelloStoreUSA, from a non sales point of view Mittsi's position isn't that surprising to me, she does take quite a bashing at times. But she is an amazing girl and needs to be higher up, wonder if she can convert some fans by the time the next poll comes along.

aquabluesweater, the number of votes has decreased a little this year, but I think that's down to a couple of things, unfortunately JapanFiles didn't have the time to send out a mail shot with regards to the poll so that I think lost it some votes, plus I've added in some extra measures when it comes to rigging which picked up more than last time. But, I'm always shocked to see the amount of attention the poll gets each year, I was quite pleased to see it appearing in the Hello!Online tweets.

H!P, I did think about adding email confirmation, but decided against it as I thought it would put people off. In the end I reworked the code to spot double votes and potential riggings, part of the reason why the poll took so much longer to create than I had originally anticipated.

Morningtime, I might see if I can find Himalia's posts about the sales ranking, although not exactly the same as I'm guessing people can be swayed by the odd set of photos/merch that looks good or isn't available from another member or unit, it'll be a good comparison for Japanese and Western fans.

As for the Top 3, it sync with my rankings, although slightly altered. I'd have Eririn as 1st, Ai-chan 2nd and Reina 3rd. Though I understand Ai-chan hold over Eririn, leader, amazing singer and dancer, beautiful, cuty, sexy and petite. so I can why the majority rank her first. I'm just so excited that Eririn is 2nd. I meant to do it this week with the other two packages but I ran out of patience trying to mail two of my packages that would take too much room in my suitcase. Anyway the point is I need your address to mail the photos. Although I think it's great that Eri reaches the 2nd place, and Sayumi the 5th, I'm quite disappointed with some other places, especially for Nacky and Aika... I thought Mittens has gained some popularity as I was reading the comments on some H!P fansites, with more and more people saying that she's cute and that she has so much improved. But I suppose that haters will always hate her, no matter how hard she tries. That's a shame, really. I don't know how the fans who so much need a scapegoat among their idols are able to keep claiming themselves fans...

The whole top is not a surprise, except those little deceptions.

Regarding Aika, keep in mind that the Tokyo store sales are, well... from that one store in Tokyo. I wouldn't expect much variation among the Tokyo area stores but keep in mind she's a Kansai girl and she gets a lot of love in that region, just as I'm sure a few other girls' sales are lower in that region than they are in Tokyo.

He vows that better times are ahead for his club.

Jordan believes the Bobcats have the right coach in Mike Dunlap and a good core of young players who'll help turn the struggling franchise around after finishing 7-59 a year ago — the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history.

Jordan said the Bobcats still need to be added, but he likes the core group that includes, among others, players like Gerald Henderson, Kemba Walker, Bismack Biyombo as well as rookies Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Jeffrey Taylor. Just how fast the Bobcats become a playoff contender, he said, will depend on how fast the young players develop.

"Mike is going to be a good developmental young coach and he's going to work with these kids and make sure they continue to progress," Jordan said. Ken Griffey Jr. says he was only thinking of his teammates when he retired abruptly last June, and he's returning to Seattle for a similar reason: to help the organization that gave him his start.

Griffey arrived Wednesday afternoon at the Mariners' spring training headquarters to begin his job as a special consultant. In his new role, Griffey will work with minor leaguers and might make an occasional appearance in the TV booth.
